Kishore Kumar was a force of nature – wherever he sang, wherever he performed, he captivated people’s hearts. He is one man whom even Pakistanis love with their hearts forgetting all the conflicts.
Kishore da was an actor, singer, actor, screenwriter, producer, director and script writer. He sang in Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada, Bhojpuri, Malayalam, Odia, and Urdu. He won 8 Filmfare Awards for Best Male Playback Singer which is an unbroken record. All this from a man who never learnt how to sing or play music!
Kishore was born as Abhas Kumar Ganguly on August 4, 1929 in Khandwa, a town in Madhya Pradesh. Brother of renowned actor Ashok Kumar and husband of Madhubala, he has always been a person you cannot not love. Who would be able to ignore him when he would get up on stage and start with ‘Pyaare bandhuyon, mere nana naniyon’? Kishore da is also an example how one overcame stage panic and became one of the greatest performers in the world.
Although Kishore da’s wonderful songs are too many to name, here are some of our personal favourites that make us happy every time we listen to it.
Aane Wala Pal Jaane Wala Hai – Golmaal
This song since 1979 has been a winner hands down. Golmaal is one of the greatest comedies made in the history of Indian cinema. Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, it stars the unforgettable Utpal Dutt. This amazingly beautiful song, sung in talented actor Amol Palekar’s lips, makes it all the more marvellous.
Pyaar Deewana Hota Hai – Kati Patang
Kati Patang (Cut Kite) was released in 1970. The movie is simply immortalized by Rajesh Khanna and Kishore Kumar. Rajesh Khanna lip sync on his playback has probably been one of the best Bollywood gifts ever. The soulful looks of Rajesh Khanna united with Kishore da’ songs make one feel as if he was born for it.
Chala Jata Hoon – Mere Jeevan Saathi Song
Another Kishore-Rajesh epic performance that makes you stand up and want to dance! Who other than Kishore da call pull off such a magnificent feat?
Mere Jeevan Saathi was a 1972 Bollywood romantic comedy film starring Rajesh Khanna, Tanuja and Utpal Dutt. Rajesh Khanna reached dizzying heights of popularity in this movie with Kishore Kumar’s playback and RD Burman’s music.
Musafir Hon Yaaron – Parichay
Lyrics by Gulzar, Kishore Kumar created an everlasting song. Songs like these will never get old. One will never be tired of listening to these songs. In Parichay released in 1972, Jeetendra casts with Jaya Bhaduri, Asrani and Sanjeev Kumar. This heartfelt song resounds with our heart and lights up the musafir in us.
Mere Saamne Wali Khidki Mein – Padosan
He, Himself, the mad Kishore Kumar performing in this song. Singing in playback, singing on screen and Sunil Dutt giving the unmatched lip-performance. Padosan , since 1968 has been making Indians happy. He along with Mehmood, Om Prakash, Saira Banu and Sunil Dutt created one of the greatest comedies on screen.
The list will be incomplete without this Bengali classic. The song was penned by Rabindranath
Tagore, one of the men whom Kishore Kumar considered his gurus. With this song, he proved his mastery over Rabindra Sangeet as well.
Ye Shaam Mastani – Kati Patang
One romantic song without which this list would remain incomplete. Rajesh Khanna and Asha Bhonsle in this Kati Patang song will remain as one of the most profound romances ever shot on screen. Kishore da’s voice simply brings out what lies deep within the heart.
