Punascha (Over Again) 1962 was the first film of Mrinal Sen to cast Soumitra Chatterjee. This movie was ahead of his time. This film had explored the problems of the then, that arose in the Indian household when the wife would go to work.
Pratinidhi (The Representative) was released in and was based on a novel by Achintya Kumar Sengupta called as Prachhadpat. Soumitra plays the role of Niren, a young engineer who marries the widow with her child but is helpless as the child rejects him and the marriage fails.

All family members are shocked and have questions. Their unansered questions probably had their solution in her diary – but no one can face to read it. Mrinal Sen excellently portrays how the characters in this middle class family faced tragedy and their inner fears.
